Reykjavik Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir and Veitur utility chief executive Sólrún Kristjánsdóttir formally launched geothermal drilling at Engjateigur in Laugardalur on Thursday, mbl.is reported. The project is intended to help secure enough hot water for a growing population.
Four wells are planned, with work expected to continue until spring. Kristjánsdóttir said the drilling could increase capacity by as much as 40%, improve operational security and strengthen the utility’s ability to meet demand during cold spells.
Björnsdóttir said the city needed to explore new areas and maintain its infrastructure to ensure a reliable supply. Geothermal heat beneath Laugardalur has played an important role in Reykjavik’s district heating system, she said.
The rig is electric and quieter than a diesel-powered one, making it more suitable for use in the city, Kristjánsdóttir said. The work area is fenced, and safety measures include daily risk assessments, safety training for people entering the site and appropriate protective equipment.
