Landsvirkjun has completed the foundations for all 28 turbines at the Vaðölduver wind farm, mbl.is reports. The final foundation was poured on October 2.
The completed wind farm is planned to have an installed capacity of about 120 megawatts. Fourteen turbines were erected this summer, with the remaining 14 scheduled for installation in 2027. The entire wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of that year.
Each turbine stands 150 metres tall and weighs 582 tonnes. Its foundation is about 23 metres in diameter and covers roughly 415 square metres. Each required around 400 cubic metres of concrete and 70 tonnes of steel. In total, the foundations used 11,200 cubic metres of concrete and 1,960 tonnes of steel.
Work on the foundations began in September 2025 and continued alongside the transport and installation of turbines. The work included excavation, preparing the base, fitting steel reinforcement and positioning the tower anchors. Those anchors had to be set precisely so the bottom of each tower would fit correctly during installation.
Ístak carried out the construction work, while COWI oversaw the project. Vaðölduver is being built east of the Þjórsá river and south of Sultartangi dam in Rangárþing ytra. It was commissioned on September 15, when the turbine blades began turning and electricity started flowing into Landsnet’s transmission system.
