Faroese compulsory schools are questioning how much they rely on technology, with a radio discussion asking whether its use has gone too far in some areas, KVF reports.
Technology is creating challenges both locally and internationally. The article says there appears to be international agreement that children should not have unrestricted access to the internet and social media, and that various restrictions have been introduced or are being planned.
In Faroese schools, pencils, paper and chalk are used less, while most work is done on screens. Although smartphones have been taken away from pupils, teachers want work phones in addition to their personal phones for use during school hours.
The programme Breddin will discuss the issue with Jacob Eli S. Olsen, chair of the Teachers’ Association; Eyðun Gaard, director of Námi; and teacher Steintór Rasmussen, who wrote an article titled “The school is making us all computer slaves.” The programme is scheduled for 10 a.m.
