The high tide at Vík in Mýrdal peaked shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday, but water did not reach Route 1 and the sea level is now falling, mbl.is reported.

Water came to within about 10 to 20 metres of the road, according to G. Pétur Matthíasson, an information officer for Vegagerðin, the road administration.

“We had more or less expected the water to flood the road. It did not happen, which is very good,” he said.

Earlier that evening, floodwater had reached houses and covered roads in an industrial district at the eastern end of Vík. Matthíasson said no roads were flooded elsewhere.
