Winds are picking up in northwestern Iceland as a deep, intense low-pressure system crosses the country, mbl.is reports. Weather has eased for the most part in the south, but winds are strengthening around Breiðafjörður, Strandir, northwestern Iceland and Faxaflói.
Þorsteinn V. Jónsson, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said blizzard conditions are forecast in the northwest, with wind speeds of 18 to 25 metres per second. Orange weather warnings are in effect, and lightning is possible along the weather front.
Heavy rain is falling in the southeast and in the Eastfjords, where yellow warnings for precipitation are in effect.
Most of the country is expected to see conditions ease overnight and by tomorrow morning. Temperatures are set to fall, with sleet showers possible in the capital area this evening and icy conditions possible tomorrow morning.
