Former Los Angeles gang leader Duane Davis was sentenced in Las Vegas on Tuesday to at least 40 years in prison for his role in the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, mbl.is reported, citing AFP.
At his sentencing, Judge Carli Kierny said Davis could not take a man from his family and take away his life and future without facing consequences, particularly when that man was Shakur.
Prosecutors said Davis ordered the killing after his nephew was beaten by members of Shakur’s entourage at a Las Vegas casino on September 7, 1996. About two hours later, a white Cadillac pulled up beside the BMW carrying Shakur at a traffic light. A gunman in the Cadillac shot the rapper, who was in the BMW’s front passenger seat.
At trial, evidence showed Davis handed a gun to a man in the Cadillac’s back seat and told him to shoot Shakur. Shakur died six days later, aged 25. Davis had previously described his involvement in books and interviews, but pleaded not guilty at trial. He is the only person from the Cadillac that night who is still alive.
