A Finnish man in his thirties fell from the balcony of his apartment in Kirkkonummi in early October, in an accident watched live by a large online audience, Yle reports. Police have said he did not die.
The fall itself was not captured on video. Footage reviewed by Yle shows the man behaving erratically and walking onto his balcony during a broadcast. The stream remained open, and emergency vehicles can be heard arriving shortly afterwards.
Clips related to the incident have spread widely online, with some on TikTok receiving hundreds of thousands of views. The man is one of Finland’s best-known so-called decadence streamers, people who broadcast lives marked by substance use for online audiences. Yle says the accident is among the most serious reported in this form of streaming in Finland.
In the weeks before the fall, the man posted videos of himself drinking alcohol, using drugs and damaging property. Online discussions about him had raised concerns about his use of hard drugs and the dangerous situations he was getting into.
Less than a month before the fall, he filmed himself setting fire to an outdoor recreation spot in Kirkkonummi. He later damaged a bus stop and wandered into a road, where police detained him. Ilta-Sanomat reported that police had begun a preliminary investigation into the fire. The man also had at least one other recent encounter with police during a livestream.
Neither police encounter stopped him from resuming broadcasts. He has not posted any new livestreams since the fall. Police have released no further details about the accident, and Yle says it is withholding the man’s name to protect his privacy.
