Research and development investment in the Faroe Islands rose in 2025 but remains below levels in 2022 and 2023, and well behind other Nordic countries, Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reports.
Total investment reached 1.32 per cent of gross domestic product, up 0.12 percentage points from 2024, according to figures published by Statistics Faroe Islands. In monetary terms, spending increased to 388 million kroner from 335 million kroner the previous year.
Maria Skaalum Petersen, the newly elected chair of the Council for Research, Development and Innovation, said the increase was welcome but that the shortfall needed to be addressed.
Many European countries aim to spend 3 per cent of GDP on research and development. Reaching that level in the Faroe Islands would require an additional 500 million kroner on top of current investment, Petersen said.
