Djúpavogur’s local council has proposed converting a long-unused runway into an access track to the popular black sands at the end of Berufjörður, mbl.is reports.

The environmental and works council of Múlaþing considered an application last week from Múlaþing’s ports authority for permission to build an access track and car park by the sands on Búlandsnes. The area is popular with local residents, tourists and birdwatchers.

In early September, Djúpavogur’s local council recommended using the runway instead of building a new track, which it said would cause additional disturbance. The runway has seen little use since it suffered extensive weather damage about a decade ago.

Norlandair has said the runway is not suitable for medical flights, while Isavia has confirmed that no funding is planned for its reconstruction or maintenance. Isavia blocked access to the runway two years ago.

The environmental and works council is expected to decide on the matter at its next meeting, scheduled for mid-October.
