Fjarðabyggð plans to automate its reception and telephone answering in a one-year trial, mbl.is reported.

Electronic reception kiosks will be installed at the municipality’s offices so visitors can register their arrival. Calls will be answered by an outsourced call centre located away from the town hall in Reyðarfjörður.

The town council has approved the pilot project. Information officer Haraldur Líndal Haraldsson said no staff would lose their jobs as a result; they would be assigned other duties within the municipality.
