Waste management company Sorpa will shorten winter opening hours at two smaller recycling centres, Dalvegur in Kópavogur and Jafnasel in Breiðholt, mbl.is reports. The winter schedule takes effect on November 1, 2026.
The centres will open from noon to 6.30pm from August 16 to May 15, returning to the hours they had before Sorpa extended them late last year. From May 16 to August 15, they will be open from 9am to 7pm.
Earlier this year, Sorpa stopped accepting bulky waste at the two centres, including timber, fittings, tiles and broken furniture. Customers needing to dispose of those items were directed to larger centres in Hafnarfjörður, Ánanaust and at Lambhagavegur. Since the changes, the amount of waste received at Dalvegur and Jafnasel has fallen by 60 per cent.
Sorpa said the earlier changes were intended to improve safety and traffic flow. It said waiting times had been short and customers found it easier to dispose of smaller amounts of waste. Morning visits are also considerably fewer than afternoon visits, the company said, adding that the new hours better reflect demand and vary by season.
