Father builds website to help visitors spot Copenhagen Zoo elephants

A father who repeatedly missed seeing Copenhagen Zoo’s elephants with his children has built a website where visitors can report whether the animals are outside, DR reports.

Peter Foskjær and his family often walk in Frederiksberg Gardens, a park beside the zoo’s outdoor elephant enclosure. After several unsuccessful attempts to spot the elephants, Foskjær came up with the idea for the website.

Visitors can share sightings and upload photos. The site also includes the current weather forecast. Foskjær has shared it in local Facebook groups, and says reports are gradually coming in.

There is no guarantee the elephants will be visible, Foskjær said. Copenhagen Zoo told DR that the animals do not follow a fixed schedule for being indoors or outdoors. Their choice typically depends on where food is available and on the weather.
