The Social Democratic Alliance and the Progressive Party have formed a new governing majority in the municipality of Suðurnesjabær, mbl.is reports.
The parties signed their coalition agreement earlier in the evening. The Social Democratic Alliance and the Independence Party had previously governed together, but that partnership ended last weekend.
Social Democratic Alliance leader Svavar Grétarsson will remain chairman of the town council executive committee. Progressive Party leader Anton Kristinn Guðmundsson will become president of the town council, while Alexandra Jóhannsdóttir will continue as mayor.
The parties said recent days had been marked by political uncertainty and that the new majority aims to ensure stable local government. They said their cooperation would be based on mutual trust and respect, with residents’ interests taking priority.
Key priorities during the term will include developing sports facilities, addressing school and preschool matters, improving services for older people and supporting local businesses. The parties also highlighted future development of Miðjan, better transport and road safety, and work with the state to build a nursing home in Suðurnesjabær.
Other priorities include the future of Sandgerði harbour, providing a range of plots for housing and business, and ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with the municipality’s growth.
