Høje-Taastrup Mayor Michael Ziegler is using his autumn break to drive a car to Ukraine for the country’s armed forces, DR reports. He is making the trip as a volunteer with the non-profit group Biler til Ukraine.
The group raises money to buy older but roadworthy vehicles, which volunteers drive to Ukraine and hand over to the Ukrainian military. It has sent 953 cars, buses, ambulances and vans so far, and has 400 unpaid drivers, according to the group.
Ziegler said he wanted to do more than support Ukraine from a distance. He described his contribution as small, but said it could make a difference alongside many others.
He will travel with a co-driver, and expects the drive to Kyiv to take a couple of days.
