Former news editor Sigurveig I. Jónsdóttir dies

Sigurveig I. Jónsdóttir, a former news editor at Stöð 2 and former information officer at Íslandsbanki, has died, mbl.is reports. She died on October 9.
Jónsdóttir was born in Reykjavík on September 9, 1943, and was the youngest of four siblings. Her brothers were artist Torfi, lawyer and accountant Helgi V., and former savings bank director Hallgrímur G. Jónsson. Her parents were wholesaler Jón Sigurður Helgason and homemaker Hanna Alvilda Helgason.
She grew up in Reykjavík and attended Miðbæjarskóli and Gaggó Aust schools. She graduated from the Icelandic Commercial College and studied sociology at the University of Iceland.
Jónsdóttir married Víglundur Þorsteinsson, a former managing director of B.M. Vallár, in 1964. They later divorced. He died in 2018. They had three sons: Jón Þór, an information officer for the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue; Þorsteinn, chief executive of Hornsteinn; and Björn, sales manager at Hekla. She had eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She spent most of her career in the media, working as a journalist at Vísir and as a reporter at the Ríkisútvarpið newsroom. She was among the pioneers at Stöð 2’s newsroom, first serving as deputy news editor and later as news editor.
After working for a time as an information officer at Íslandsbanki, Jónsdóttir ended her career as a freelance writer. Among other projects, she co-wrote a 100-year history of Síminn and a history of Ferðaþjónustan with Helga Guðrún Johnson.
