Finland will introduce a citizenship test from the start of March, the Finnish Immigration Service said in a statement, Yle reports. The change applies to applicants aged 18 to 64.
Applicants can demonstrate their knowledge by taking the test or by completing a Finnish- or Swedish-language matriculation or higher education degree in Finland. The Immigration Service will administer the test.
A group of experts from the University of Helsinki is preparing the study material and test content. The test will use multiple-choice questions on topics including key laws, fundamental and human rights, equality, gender equality, Finnish history and culture. The Immigration Service will publish preparatory material online.
Immigration Service Director General Ilkka Haahtela said the test was the final part of a series of changes that have tightened citizenship requirements, including rules on residency and means of support. Sweden, Denmark and Norway already have citizenship tests.
