The Icelandic Motorsport Federation is working to introduce young people to the sport as a safe alternative to reckless driving, its chairman Jón Þór Jónsson told mbl.is’s Dagmál programme.

The effort comes after several serious car accidents linked to reckless driving. Icelandic Sports Association president Willum Þór Þórsson has also spoken in support of the motorsport federation, Jón Þór said.

Jón Þór said municipalities could do more to support motorsports, arguing that attention often goes to larger or more popular sports. Not everyone finds their place in football, basketball or golf, he said, and motorsports can fill a gap by offering an activity suited to them.
