Authorities at MR and Versló have cancelled and postponed student events after drunkenness and fighting at a football match between the schools, mbl.is reported. Police were called to the match at Vivaldi field in Seltjarnarnes on Wednesday evening.
A competition between the schools due to take place in Hljómskálagarður park on Thursday was cancelled. A debating competition scheduled for Friday at Versló has been postponed until Sunday at 5 p.m.
In a letter to students and parents, MR rector Sólveig Guðrún Hannesdóttir called Wednesday’s events unacceptable. She said the behaviour fell far short of the respect, sportsmanship and responsibility expected of students and cast a shadow over the school community.
Hannesdóttir said she had received information from people at the scene and from police. She said violence, threatening behaviour and disorder would not be tolerated, and that those involved must take responsibility for their actions.
She said school authorities did not feel able to hold events where students from the two schools compete with limited supervision in light of what happened.
