Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has won this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature, mbl.is reported. She said she was surprised by the award and did not believe she deserved it.
“I think they’re crazy to have chosen me. It’s a wonderful prize, but I don’t deserve it,” Carson said.
Carson became an Icelandic citizen in 2022, making her the first Icelander to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since Halldór Laxness received it in 1955.
Speaking at her home in the Vesturbær neighbourhood of Reykjavík, Carson said she and those around her had come to see Iceland as a better place to live than anywhere else because of its people and their values. She also praised the landscape and said people’s attitudes were different from those elsewhere.
Carson spoke to an mbl.is reporter shortly after the award was announced. The publisher said a longer interview with her would appear later that evening.
