Municipal leaders focus on infrastructure and financing costs

More than 500 representatives of municipalities across Iceland are meeting to discuss local government priorities, with infrastructure development and financing costs in focus, mbl.is reports.

The 2026 Municipal Finance Conference opens at 10 a.m. at Vör, a passenger terminal operated by Faxaflóahafnir at Skarfabakki, and runs for two days. Its programme covers the current situation and outlook for municipalities, finance, economic affairs, education, employment issues, digital affairs and infrastructure.

Almar Guðmundsson, chair of the Association of Local Authorities in Iceland, will open the conference. The morning programme also includes presentations by Infrastructure Minister Eyjólfur Ármannsson, Finance Minister Daði Már Kristófersson and Central Bank Governor Ásgeir Jónsson. They will then take part in a panel discussion moderated by Bogi Ágústsson.
