Police are investigating whether an 18-year-old suspect gave drugs to a 15-year-old girl who was later found dead, Yle reports. Her body was found in early September in the stairwell of an apartment building in Asola, Vantaa.
The man is suspected of aggravated negligent homicide, rape of a child and a drug offence. He lived in the building where the girl was found. Police have not publicly detailed the circumstances of her death.
According to information obtained by Yle, the girl had run away from a child welfare institution before she died.
A law that took effect in early October allows authorities to obtain location data from the phones of children who have run away from care. Previously, this was permitted only in a clear and immediate danger situation.
Under the law, staff at child welfare institutions may apprehend a child who has run away and take them back. They may use force to remove bladed weapons or drugs during transport if necessary to ensure the child can be taken back safely. Police can also assist with the transport.
