Greenland’s head of government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the Faroe Islands’ head of government, Beinir Johannessen, will meet Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir today, mbl.is reports.
They also plan to visit the security area at Keflavík Airport and meet international investors focused on opportunities in the West Nordic region and the Arctic.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome representatives of our closest neighbours and discuss our shared interests and our distinctive position in the North Atlantic and the Arctic,” Frostadóttir said in a statement. She said the West Nordic region had featured prominently in international affairs recently, and that people in the countries had faced security challenges in the North Atlantic and taken their responsibilities seriously.
The visit is Nielsen and Johannessen’s first to Iceland since taking office. Frostadóttir visited Tórshavn in May and Nuuk in October last year. The prime minister’s office said this is the first time the countries’ heads of government have met specifically in one of the countries to discuss shared interests.
