European Court of Human Rights, freedom of expression, Iceland

Margrét McArthur Friðriksdóttir is preparing an application to the European Court of Human Rights over her conviction for comments about district court judge Barbara Björnsdóttir, mbl.is reports.

In a statement, Friðriksdóttir said the application would focus on whether Iceland had ensured her right to a fair trial and whether the restriction on her freedom of expression was necessary and proportionate under the European Convention on Human Rights. She said she would not ask the court to rule on personal allegations about individual judges.

The comments came after Friðriksdóttir was sentenced to 30 days in prison, suspended, for threatening to kill Sema Erla Serder, founder of Solaris. Björnsdóttir was the judge in that case. Friðriksdóttir was fined 200,000 krónur for her comments.

The application is being prepared and will be sent to the court in Strasbourg.
