US ambassador to Iceland Billy Long joined the team that welcomed Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his arrival in Iceland, mbl.is reported.
Long was at Keflavik Airport when Rubio arrived and was also among those present at Höfði and Safnahúsið, where a press conference was held. He sat beside Svanhildur Hólm Valsdóttir, Iceland’s ambassador to the United States, at Safnahúsið.
At the press conference, Þorgerður Katrín was asked about an image President Donald Trump posted last month showing Iceland and other countries in the colours of the US flag. She said she had called Long in to discuss the matter and received clear answers. Rubio declined to comment.
After the press conference, Rubio briefly visited the US embassy at Engjateigur. He then viewed the US Navy’s P-8 Poseidon submarine-hunting aircraft at Keflavik Airport with Long and Þorgerður Katrín before leaving Iceland.
Rubio was due to travel next to Athens for talks on regional and energy security, followed by a brief stop in Lisbon.
