US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was not in Iceland to discuss social media posts and described relations between Iceland and the United States as positive, mbl.is reported. He made the remarks at a news conference with Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir at Safnahúsið, a building hosting the event.
A New York Times reporter asked Rubio about a post shared last month by US President Donald Trump. It showed Iceland, Greenland, Canada and other countries south of the United States as part of US territory.
Þorgerður said the matter had already been handled constructively. She said Iceland was open about its position because it had a very good relationship with the United States and wanted to preserve and build on it. She said she was focused on the future and on strong relations between the two countries: “We look forward, not backward.”
