Sweden’s red-green parties have agreed on a joint parliamentary committee initiative to stop deportations of teenagers, SVT reported Tuesday. The proposal includes a law to halt the deportations, Green Party MP Annika Hirvonen said.
The debate has focused on young people who receive deportation notices when they turn 18 because they no longer meet the requirements to stay. Until then, they may have been allowed to live in Sweden based on their ties to their parents.
The Tidö parties introduced a measure, which took effect on October 1, raising from 18 to 21 the age limit for residence permits as a relative of a parent. The red-green parties have sought further changes but had not previously agreed on all of them.
The Left Party, Centre Party and Green Party have wanted to restore “particularly distressing circumstances” as grounds for residence permits. The Social Democrats have opposed that change.
