Reykjavík has imposed a temporary ban on drone flights during US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Iceland, mbl.is reported, citing a notice from the Icelandic Transport Authority.

The ban began at 5 p.m. on Monday and will remain in effect until 4 p.m. on Tuesday. It covers drones and other remotely controlled aircraft within the red-shaded area shown on an accompanying map.

The national police commissioner introduced the restriction for public safety and security. Police will deploy drone teams for law enforcement and aerial surveillance, and will actively monitor for unauthorised flights.

Unauthorised flights may lead to fines and the confiscation of equipment.
