Pink October is drawing attention to breast cancer, early detection and support for people affected by the disease, KVF reports. The Cancer Society is holding events around the country, with a focus on community and physical activity.

Women in the Faroe Islands aged 50 to 69 are offered mammography screening every two years. Screening can detect changes in the breast before a woman can feel them herself. Breast cancer also affects younger women.

Súsan Joensen was 39 when she was diagnosed in December 2015. Since then, she has spoken openly about her experience, writing a blog and giving lectures on the subject. This December will mark 11 years since her diagnosis.

Joensen is now cancer-free but continues to share her story to raise awareness of breast cancer.
