The Council for Road Safety says its work remains relevant 50 years after its founding, despite improvements in traffic conditions, KVF reports. The council was established by committed individuals who were concerned about poor road safety.

In its early years, the council carried out tasks now handled by specially trained advisers. At the time, specialist knowledge was not part of the process for work such as designing roads. That has changed, says director Lovisa Petersen Glerfoss.

The council’s fundamental task remains the same, although its focus may have shifted, she says. Its work is based on changing attitudes, which takes time. That includes encouraging people to wear seatbelts, avoid speeding and concentrate while driving.

People already know what is good for them, Glerfoss says, but that knowledge is not always enough to make them do the right thing.
