Construction of a new sea defence at Grundartangi is complete, mbl.is reported. More than 200,000 cubic metres of core material and rock were used to build it.
The defence, built west of the existing Faxaflóahafnir structure, forms part of a new flow basin and will support continued services for industrial companies in the area until other options become available.
The work included processing and sorting material for the structure, and building an access road to its western end. Organic soil was removed from the bedrock and moved to a berm west of the quarry area.
Faxaflóahafnir said the project is part of efforts to maintain and develop infrastructure at Grundartangi port and support businesses there. Grundartangi is one of Iceland’s largest industrial and port areas, and the second-largest port operated by Faxaflóahafnir.
