Questions about higher taxes on electric cars are dominating Denmark’s largest electric car fair, DR reports. The event is being held at Messecenter Herning and runs until Sunday.
The government has said taxes will rise after the New Year on the most expensive electric cars, those costing more than 366,000 kroner. Visitors are asking whether they can get a car delivered before the increase takes effect, said Mads Rørvig, director of Mobility Denmark.
“The most discussed topic here is taxes. It is not just expensive cars; the best-selling family cars will also see a fairly substantial tax increase,” Rørvig said. “There are a lot of questions about whether people can get their car before the tax goes up.”
Visitor Benedikte Christensen, from Espergærde, said the change could affect her choice of electric car. She also warned that raising prices could undermine the goal of encouraging people to drive greener.
“If the state wants us to drive green, it is shooting itself in the foot by raising the price,” she said.
Rørvig said car importers are doing what they can to bring vehicles into Denmark before the increase, but not all will be able to do so.
