Drivers receive huge bills after toll system error
Drivers have received bills for incorrect amounts after using the Ring Road bridge over Hornafjarðarfljót, mbl.is reported. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration says a system error is being investigated.
One driver told mbl.is they had received 10 charges totalling 46,620 Icelandic krónur. They said other drivers had reported bills worth several hundred thousand krónur, including charges for multiple previous months. Billing was due to begin on 1 September.
The issue has also been widely discussed on the municipality’s Facebook page.
G. Pétur Matthíasson, a spokesperson for the administration, said the error was being examined by those responsible for billing. “People need not worry. Nobody will be charged incorrect amounts; we will sort this out,” he said.
Under the administration’s tariff, the monthly charge is capped at 18,750 krónur for vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tonnes and 26,250 krónur for medium-sized vehicles. The bridge opened this summer.
