A restaurant worker was taken to hospital after being stabbed at Helsinki railway station on Wednesday. Yle reported that the suspected attacker, a young man born in 2003, was behaving erratically.

Police said the man had been removed from a bar earlier that morning because of his behaviour. He returned at about 2pm and attacked a member of restaurant staff, deputy lead investigator Tuomas Lindholm said. The victim was not in life-threatening condition.

The man left the scene but was detained by security guards nearby. He is suspected of attempted manslaughter and has not yet been questioned. He is not in custody pending trial.

Lindholm said the serious act of violence caused fear and confusion at the station. He added that police generally increase their presence in places where disorder has been reported. Iltalehti first reported the incident.
