Short-term rental proposal will not ensure fairer competition

The Tourism Association says a proposal on short-term rentals would not ensure fairer competition between accommodation businesses and tourist rentals, KVF reports. The association broadly supports the proposal, put forward by Tjóðveldi and Framsókn.
The association says a registration system should be a basic part of the law if it is to achieve fairer competition. At a minimum, homes intended for short-term rental should be registered, it says, regardless of whether the municipality sets its own rules.
Rental listings should include the property’s registration number. The association says this would help public authorities monitor the short-term rental market and ensure the correct taxes and charges are paid, preventing competition from being distorted.
