Marco Rubio to visit Iceland next week

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accepted an invitation from Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and will visit Iceland next week, mbl.is reports.

The Icelandic government said Gunnarsdóttir had renewed the invitation when she met Rubio in New York recently. She said it was a pleasure that he had accepted and that the visit reflected the solid foundation of cooperation between Iceland and the United States.

Gunnarsdóttir said strengthening Iceland’s ties with its closest friends and allies on both sides of the Atlantic had been a priority during her time as foreign minister. She said the two countries were in active talks on shared interests, particularly defence cooperation, security in the Arctic and trade.

She said she looked forward to welcoming Rubio and that the visit would further strengthen relations between the countries.
