The Environment and Natural Resources Appeals Committee has upheld a decision to fine fish processor Premium of Iceland ISK 50,000 per day until it stops operating at its premises in Njarðvík, in the municipality of Reykjanesbær, mbl.is reported.
The company’s fish-processing activity at Brekkustígur 22–24 was not registered, and its application to confirm the registration was rejected because the operation was deemed incompatible with Reykjanesbær’s current master plan.
Premium of Iceland challenged the decision, arguing that planning rules allowed existing operations to continue and that fish processing had taken place in the building for decades.
The committee said the activity required registration, which the company had not obtained. It therefore ruled that the operation was unauthorised until registration is confirmed.
The daily fines apply from May 22 until the operation is stopped. Their legal effect had been suspended while the committee considered the case.
