A 52-year-old Syrian citizen has been sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for laundering criminal proceeds, including giving 30,000 kroner to a young Swedish man who later attacked the Israeli embassy in Hellerup, DR reports.

Copenhagen City Court also ordered the man expelled from Denmark and barred him from re-entering for six years. He was convicted of particularly serious money laundering for transferring or attempting to transfer 3.4 million kroner in total, money that came from crime. The 30,000 kroner was handed over on September 30, 2024.

Two grenades exploded on the rooftop terrace of a house near the embassy during the night of October 2, 2024. Two young Swedish citizens were sentenced in February to 12 and 14 years in prison for terrorism and attempted murder. Both have appealed, with the appeal hearing due next autumn.

At their trial, the two Swedes said they had been hired by the Swedish criminal network Foxtrot to travel to Denmark and carry out the attack. They said they had no political position on the conflict in Gaza. The jury found they intended to seriously frighten Israel’s population and convicted them of terrorism.

The 52-year-old was arrested on October 14, 2024, and initially charged with complicity in the explosion. He was released in February 2025 after that charge was dropped, but police continued investigating him.

His 27-year-old son was also sentenced to one year in prison for jointly transferring or attempting to transfer 1.4 million kroner in criminal proceeds with his father. Both men have asked for time to decide whether to appeal to the Eastern High Court.
