Reykjavík boosts police presence at Mjódd transit interchange

Police have increased their presence at Mjódd, a transit interchange in Reykjavík, as concerns about groups gathering there have persisted for some time, the city told mbl.is. The inquiry followed an assault at the interchange over the weekend.

The city said police had been more visible in the area in recent weeks and would continue their increased presence. Flotinn, Reykjavík’s mobile youth centre, has also been monitoring young people and visiting the interchange outside youth-centre opening hours to talk with them.

Reykjavík did not directly assess whether the current security arrangements were adequate, saying instead that all parties were reviewing the matter and seeking improvements.

The city says GTS ehf., the interchange’s operator, is responsible for its day-to-day running, including security, toilets and overall oversight. Security is required under GTS’s lease and was reiterated in a 2025 declaration of intent.

mbl.is had asked GTS how security is carried out, whether it had changed since spring and whether further measures were planned. The company had not responded by the time the article was updated.

Additional camera surveillance inside the building has also been discussed, but no formal decision has been made by the owners’ association. Reykjavík owns only part of the building and says it must follow the association’s majority decisions. Work is also under way on plans and improvements to the waiting area, including access and toilet facilities.

Nettó, which operates a shop at Mjódd, said it has good security and cooperates well with police. The weekend assault did not take place inside its shop, and neither staff nor the store’s security guard noticed it. The company said incidents of this kind were fortunately uncommon.
