Gusts of up to 35 metres per second forecast in Iceland

Strong winds are forecast in parts of Iceland, with gusts potentially reaching 35 metres per second, mbl.is reports, citing Daniel Þorláksson, a meteorologist with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

Strong southeasterly winds are expected in the south of the country late this evening and in the northeast overnight. Around the Eyjafjöll mountains and in Öræfi, sharp gusts are forecast from 10 p.m. tonight until 4 a.m.

In the northeast, strong gusts are expected near mountains from the Tröllaskagi peninsula east to Hérað, and could persist until noon tomorrow.

Heavy rain is forecast in the southeast overnight and tomorrow morning, increasing the risk of rockfalls at known locations, including the Hvalnesskriður slopes. Unbridged rivers in the southern highlands may also become difficult to cross.
