IRF works to keep slaughter byproducts out of the incinerator

Waste company IRF is working with partners on a project to make use of slaughter byproducts instead of burning them, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Liver, blood, tallow, kidneys and other parts of slaughtered animals often go unused. “It is very regrettable,” IRF director Sigurd L. Lamhauge said.

There are no clear figures on how much offal is burned because all biological material sent for incineration is recorded together. This autumn, the first attempt will be made to record biological slaughter waste separately.

IRF and its partners have been working on the project for more than two years. A recipe book titled “What remains” was published last year, and a website has been created to help people buy and sell offal and simplify administration for sellers.

IRF is leading the project with the Agricultural Fund, MBM and the farmers’ association.
