Wärtsilä to supply engines for Australia’s largest engine power plant

Technology company Wärtsilä has won a significant order to supply engines for Australia’s largest engine power plant, Yle reports. The engines will be manufactured in Vaasa, supporting production and employment there, although Wärtsilä does not estimate the employment impact of individual orders.

The 300-megawatt plant is due to begin operating in 2030. It is expected to strengthen the reliability of Australia’s national grid and increase its balancing capacity.

The plant will have 13 gas engines, with the equipment scheduled for delivery to Australia in early 2029.

Wärtsilä says Australia’s energy transition requires generation capacity that supports renewable energy. The company says its engines will help stabilise the grid and improve the reliability of the electricity system as wind and solar power use grows.
