Prisoner gets two years for throwing hot oil at fellow inmate

Yle reports that a 30-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison for throwing hot oil over another inmate at Sukeva Prison in Northern Savonia in autumn 2022.

The victim suffered burns across his body, and the oil partly melted his hoodie. His injuries required extensive treatment.

The Northern Savonia District Court found that the attack was carried out in a particularly cruel manner and was intended to cause serious bodily injury. The court also took account of the defendant’s previous criminal record. He denied the charges.

The victim’s estate was the plaintiff in the case. Its lawyer said the victim died of natural causes and that his death was unrelated to the 2022 assault. The court ordered the defendant to pay the estate 20,000 euros in compensation for harm caused by the attack.

The ruling is not final and can be appealed. The defendant has said he is dissatisfied with the judgment.
