Visual artists urge Reykjavík to restore support for 15 cultural groups

The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (SÍM) is urging Reykjavík to reverse its decision to end affordable-rent support for 15 cultural groups, mbl.is reports.

In a statement, SÍM said access to affordable premises was fundamental to sustaining the city’s arts scene. It called on the city to withdraw the terminations or immediately introduce a new action plan.

The association warned that the decision could sacrifice years of work by artists, who have invested substantial time, labour and personal funds in developing the cultural centres. It also said artists’ contributions often receive less recognition and public support than sports activities, despite the value they bring to society.

SÍM described the decision as sudden and said it appeared to have been made without new plans or a full assessment of its consequences. The association urged the city council to reconsider and seek other ways to make necessary changes and ensure fire safety, rather than closing the centres at short notice.

It also called for city officials to meet with the leaders of the arts centres to find solutions and protect the work built up over many years.
