Oulu man receives third rape conviction, gets eight-month sentence

A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months in prison for raping a woman in 2023, giving him a third rape conviction, Yle reported, citing Oulu District Court.

The court said the sentence was reduced because the man, Nahom Hagos, had recently received a prison term of two years and nine months for another rape. Without that earlier sentence, the term for the latest offence would have been about two years, the court said.

Hagos committed the offence while on probation from an earlier rape sentence. The district court issued the earlier ruling last summer, and the Court of Appeal upheld it in April.

The latest case concerned a woman Hagos knew. She believed they would spend the evening at his apartment, but the court found that he raped her as soon as they arrived.

Hagos was first convicted of rape in 2020 for violently assaulting an 85-year-old woman in the laundry room of an apartment building in Oulu the previous year. The victim suffered injuries that required hospital treatment. Yle said it was publishing Hagos’s name because he had repeatedly committed the same serious crime and received lengthy prison sentences for earlier offences.
