Mayor urges review of Westfjords infrastructure for Greenland base
Gylfi Ólafsson, mayor of Ísafjarðarbær, says planned US military development at Meistaravík in Greenland should prompt a review of whether infrastructure in the Westfjords needs upgrading so Iceland can better assist the United States and other NATO members, mbl.is reports.
He points to projects that could serve both civilian and military purposes, including deepening and expanding harbours and improving fuel storage. Ísafjörður could also be a suitable point for transporting people and equipment to the new military base, he says.
