SÁÁ medical director resigns after two weeks in acting role

Jón Áki Jensson has resigned as SÁÁ’s director of medical services, just two weeks after temporarily taking the position, mbl.is reported. He confirmed the resignation to RÚV, describing his time in the role as challenging but instructive.

Jensson said he had been asked to step into a difficult dispute and ensure SÁÁ’s essential services continued. He soon found that medical staffing was seriously inadequate, however, and that efforts to find a sufficient solution had failed. He said another institution with the necessary staff would need to become involved.

He said he would work through his notice period and that his resignation would not recreate the situation in which the Directorate of Health had threatened to close Vog unless a specialist doctor took professional responsibility for its healthcare services. Jensson took on that responsibility at the time.

There has been significant unrest within SÁÁ since its executive management reached a departure agreement with the organisation’s chief executive and hired new managers.
