Tórshavn closes city-centre toilets, councillor says it is unacceptable

People visiting central Tórshavn must wait until they reach Sandagerð if they need a toilet, KVF reports. The municipality has locked the public toilets in the city centre, a decision councillor Tróndur Sigurðsson says the municipality cannot offer residents and visitors.

Vera Bjørgvin, who KVF met on the streets of Tórshavn, agreed that the situation was not acceptable for either Faroese people or tourists.

According to an article in Dimma, Tórshavn Mayor Elsa Berg said police had strongly urged the municipal council to close the public toilets during the evenings and nights because they were being used to buy, sell and take drugs.

However, the toilets were also closed when KVF visited in the early afternoon. Police were asked to confirm the statement but were unable to comment on it that day.

Sigurðsson said a solution should not be difficult to find. Security guards could be used to improve safety at the toilets, he said.

Asked how much the municipality could spend on such measures, he said it would have to spend whatever was required and necessary to resolve the situation.

KVF tried to ask Berg how she planned to address the issue but was unable to reach the mayor.
