City authorities to scrap binding limits on parking spaces

City authorities will abolish binding rules setting a maximum number of parking spaces for new construction and urban redevelopment, and will revise the applicable reference values, mbl.is reports.

Einar Þorsteinsson, a city representative for the Progressive Party and chair of the city council, announced the plans at an open meeting held by the Housing, Construction and Planning Authority on Tuesday.

He said the aim was to increase flexibility and allow the number of parking spaces to be determined according to the circumstances, nature and location of each development.

Revised reference values will continue to form the basis for assessing parking needs, but it will be possible to depart from them upwards or downwards when circumstances warrant it.

Þorsteinsson said the city wanted to place greater trust in developers and respond to clear public demand for parking at home.

“Of course, we hope people will take the City Line to work, as in Keldnaland, simply because it will be faster and more convenient. But when they get home, I think most people want to have a car in a parking space for their own needs,” he said.
