Faroe Islands plan workplace anti-discrimination law for 2028

A law banning discrimination in the labour market is being prepared in the Faroe Islands, with the government aiming for it to enter into force on 1 January 2028, KVF reports. Minister Margit Stórá said work on the bill is expected to begin this autumn.

Labour-market organisations and other relevant parties, including MEGD, are to be consulted during the process, Stórá said in a response to parliamentary member Eyðgunn Samuelsen.

The equal-treatment law will prohibit discrimination in the labour market. Skills alone will determine whether a person is offered a vacant position or promoted to a higher-level job.

Stórá said all neighbouring countries have legislation guaranteeing equal treatment in the labour market. The proposed legislation is based on the European Union’s employment framework.

Samuelsen said some municipalities continue to maintain a retirement age of 70.
