New framework seeks equal dementia services across the country

People across the country should have access to good services when dementia affects them, according to a new framework for coordinating dementia care in municipalities, Kringvarp Føroya reported.

The project, called “Municipal Dementia Coordination”, was presented at an Alzheimer’s Association conference at the Nordic House on International Alzheimer’s Day on Monday.

Unn Justinussen, a nurse and deputy chair of the Alzheimer’s Association, developed the project. Municipalities have been responsible for services for older people and people with dementia since 2015.

However, municipalities are not equally prepared, resulting in differences in services across the country. There are currently no minimum requirements for municipalities in the dementia field.

Justinussen was appointed in 2017 as the country’s first municipal dementia coordinator, working for Roðin. She also discussed the project on KVF’s programme Breddin.
